The 6 Main Principles of Competency-Based Education

Competency-Based Education (CBE) is a pedagogical approach that focuses on student mastery of specific skills and knowledge rather than traditional time-based learning. Here are the six main principles of CBE:



  1. Equity: CBE prioritizes equity by providing individualized support to ensure all students have equal opportunities to succeed.
  2. Measurable Competencies: Learning objectives are clearly defined and focused on practical understanding and application of skills.
  3. Transparency: Students and parents have a clear understanding of learning goals, assessment methods, and expectations.
  4. Individualized Support: Teachers provide personalized support and feedback to help students progress at their own pace.
  5. Assessment for Growth: Assessments are used to measure student progress and inform instruction.
  6. Mastery-Based Progression: Students move forward when they demonstrate mastery of competencies.
